During the 1970s the chemist for Pfizer created a group of compounds that were psychoactive, and these were made off of the structures of neuroleptics. These led to the early creation of a certain drug, but that production was soon stopped after unwanted and dangerous effects on animals during testing. In 1977 another man named Kenneth Koe he was interested in this group of compounds and asked the Pfizer chemist to synthesize some of the derivatives of the group that had not been worked with yet. This created some new substances that were considered interesting and would be further tested. These substances were then tested on animals. The substance with the most effect was then taken into further exploration and turned in Sertraline. The scientists say that there was not real goal in working on this project and it just turned into Sertraline over time.
